Read first: IRC is one of the largest chat services in the world. IRC is an abbr. for Internet Relay Chat and was created back in the late 80s but even though old in age it still is one of the most favored chat services and is constantly updated with new tools and software.
IRC runs on almost any computer as long as there is a client program (read below) for it and of course an internet connection.
To use IRC you need a client program. This is fancy talk for a program you download or use to allow you to talk on IRC. There are many client programs available unlike with chat services like Yahoo or AIM which force you to use theirs only .
For Windows users there is... mIRC - One of the most favored client programs and easy to use www.mirc.com/get.html XChat for Windows - a lot like mIRC www.silverex.org/news/ TurboIRC - has a lot more features but not adviced for newbies. www.turboirc.com
And for Linux and Unix there are tons of clients but the most popular is.. XChat - comes with almost all Linux/Unix like OSs
Mac users along with any other type of computer user should google around for a client. I'm sure there are many of them for most all OSs.
Basic Setup Guide (for mIRC users): Here are some easy steps to get on IRC quickly for Windows users... 1) First get a copy of mIRC program (it's free)
2) Install It. Just run through the steps, it doesn't require any type of restart.
3) Start the program mIRC.
4) Simply close the about box which shows up on start
5) Time to configure IRC! Click on "File -> Options" First you will want to setup the basic information.
Fill in the following spaces: - Full Name (you can spoof it and put a fake one) - Email Address (once again you can spoof this) - Nickname (the name you want to be seen as) - Alternative Nickname (another name in case the first one is taken)
6) Set up your Identity. Click where it says Ident in the left menu, under Connect.
Usually this will already be filled out for you, but just in case you want to check it.. - Be sure that Enable Identd server is checked - User ID – Your Username (for me it’s Nitin) - System – UNIX - Port – 113 - Check Show IdentD requests - Check Enable only when connecting
Click "OK", not "Cancel" to approve the changes
7) Now, let me explain the buttons..
Right now, there are only two buttons that you need to know about: - The lightning button – Connects you to the server - Hammer/Folder Button – Brings up the options tab
8) Click the lightning button, it should list all the servers you can connect to. Each server can have anywhere from a few channels (rooms) to thousands of them. A good one to start with is EFNet so go ahead and look through the list for EFNet and double click it to connect to that server.
9) Almost done. If it connected it should have displayed a bunch of text in the Status window. In the bar in the status window type the following: /LIST
If all goes well a window should have popped open and displayed all the channels (chat rooms) you can enter. Just double click one and start chatting.
I usually hang out in irc.efnet.net : #efnet
You can find lots of interesting chats in IRC. If you can't find something then you aren't looking because IRC has by far the biggest user base of people from around the world along with the most channels.
There are channels for pirate radio, computers, general chats, games, and so much more. Heck you can even start up your own chat channels.
Have fun, see you there. Darklife.
If you have any IRC questions or need help go ahead and post it in here and I or someone else will try to respond ASAP.

thanks and 73s tubefan
IRC really isn't part of these forums so I doubt anyone here can directly help you but if I were you I would ask whoever kindly to remove your ban or at least see how long it's for. Besides that there is no way to just remove a ban if an IRC channel operator sets it.
I have used these in the past. mainly for MUDs and sometimes computer chats. Whats efnets subject matter generally? Pirate Radio? DXing in general? I may jump on if I get a wild hair
