Well over here we play whatever the fx we want. It's whatever the mood calls for. I respect those program directors who follow a format however I find that the best radio comes from complete randomness generated by those wanting to hear their favorite songs.
I always figured those who loved to listen to radio and those who stepped foot into it all appreciate college radio, so running a pirate station like such has to be a winner. The difference is up to the PD of the station which usually happens to also be the owner of the equipment and station.
Setting up a format seems senseless to me when the main goal of pirate radio is to go against the grove in the first place. Nothing wrong with copying a format, however it's usually the un-format that gets pirate stations well known and loved

Last night was some classic blues. A couple nights ago was some early 50's rockabilly. Next broadcast? Free form live probably with whatever flows. I've played shows starting with Beatles and ending with Audioslave. It can get interesting when the music is rolling and ideas start creeping in.
I'm pretty much along the same line of thought as darklife: anything that works.
I play a mixture of obscure classic and modern rock. Primarily deep cuts but some hits as well. Personally, I hate House or any kind of electronic or dance music; but to each his/her own.
We just try to play good tunes that the other corporate stations neglect. Right now its electronic/house/dubstep/breaks, then 90s/modern rock, and whatever else is good that isn't being played. We are starting to get some local bands submitting music, so we try to give them some airtime as well.
Recently we've been just playing big playlists on random, but getting tired of that. Going to try to get some kind of schedule for genres of music, and give a few people their own couple of hours to play whatever they want. Just trying to put a lil variety into it, which can be hard at times.
My station 95.9 Roman FM plays ALL types of rock music, so I do not think that's much of a format, however it is mainly all types of rock to classic rock to new rock.
Good era to play. We have a local licensed station here that is trying out that format. They went from beautiful music to easy listening, and then just switched format to 60-70s music with a bit of 80s a few months ago. It oddly seemed to save them from going the way of the dodo. Obviously pirates have much more to choose from musically but I think following trends in small town stations sometimes can be indicative to the path listeners are taking if you are in the same vicinity. I am thinking of 1 upping them and using their format but going all out pirate style using music that really grabs ears. I just can't get over the idea of playing what we want when we want. It's hard to follow format as a pirate

I am planning a Chicago (the band) show one of these evenings.
I absolutely love any of the Terry Kath era stuff and it never gets any airplay these days other than 25 or 6 to 4 or the like. A showcase of some of the really good deep album tracks of those guys, with some well-researched facts should be pretty interesting.
The local commercial stations around here either play the Sam format which is limited in playlist, and quality, new Country, or talk. We do still have one decent locally owned AM station that plays "America's Best Music" meaning Sinatra, 70's easy listening and a few decent soft rock tunes you don't hear much anymore. It sort of sounds like a step back to about 1978 or so.

I agree. I have such a wide range of musical taste. Besides the Christian alternative stuff I listen to, I like singer-songwriter, folk, newgrass, Memphis soul, 60's & 70's R & B, blues, and I get a hankerin' for 80's hair metal every once in a while. I like some ambient, some techno, old school rap, and a little bit of old country. Growing up in KCMO in the 70's, they played everything on the radio. I don't like listening to the same style of music all-day everyday, so why would I want to listen to a radio station that played the same stuff everyday?
Regular radio is boring and Christian radio has no balls. There are some AMAZING Christian artists out there who no one knows about, and when I play them for people they freak out that they've never heard of them.

I have a huge rock collection, Beatles thru Metallica to the newer bands. I am a senior in high school, and I also do some talk stuff. My friends get a kick out of it. I prank call people on-air
SWR meters are for wussies. Just pump up the Volume!
What Music Does your station play? Here in Essex most play House Music And D&B also some Garage and Dub.
Haha I'm an Essex pirate DJ we play drum & bass, garage, jungle, old school, house etc. we have DJ's who play there own style i do drum & bass and happy hardcore.
but i find the best way to make a pirate station work is let the listeners choose what they want to hear do that they'll come back that's my rule.
