I am having an issue with the PC that I use for my FM station where every once in a while it decides to restart by itself, which is frustrating because then the transmitter puts out dead air until I open winamp again . I also notice that the fans in the PC are kind of loud. Also sometimes the screen would turn blue and display an error (really quickly) before restarting. Other times the PC would just simply freeze up cold, and I would have to turn it off and back on. I used a program called HWmonitor to check the temperature and it says the CPU temp is 64 degrees celcius, but I am not sure if that is too hot. I got frustrated and so I decided to remove the side cover off of the PC, when I did this the PC lasted A LOT longer before restating, so I thing the PC may be overheating. I have also since put winamp in the startup folder so it at least resumes the music after the PC restarts Another thing I did was with a multimeter I probed one of the extra connectors coming from the Power Supply in the computer with the CPU under load and I noticed that I was only getting 11.4 volts on the 12 volt yellow wire. Is this normal or does this mean that the Power Supply in the computer is bad?
Can any of you PC guru's confirm that the problem is overheating or the power supply or is it something else? The PC is custom built about 8 years old and has a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 HT and is running Windows XP
Are you running an application that uses adobe flash when it crashes by chance? If so I had a similar problem and found it was the version I was using that conflicted with Win XP.
It could be a software driver problem if it only happens with specific things like with only audio or only videos.
Does it restart when running other applications that are processor intensive?
Loud fans are a sure sign of them having to work harder to keep things cool. The heat sink fins on the CPU and elsewhere probably have lint and piled up dust, blocking airflow, so the fans spin up to try to do their job, in turn wearing them out even faster and eventually seize up.
Take a can of compressed air and blow out the dust/lint on every vent hole, every heat sink, and even take a toothbrush and clean the fan fins of built up dirt/dust as that buildup on the fan fins prevents the fins from grabbing air properly thus the fans don't push as much air as they should, even when spun up.
The clue to all this is when you removed the cover and the PC ran longer before shutting down, that is a sure sign of an over-heating problem. PC's these days monitor their temperature internally in the CPU and discuss things between different parts of the computer, including the power supply. If it detects over-temp, it spins up the fans to compensate, but if something is blocking the airflow, well..the result is exactly what your getting, the PC shuts down trying to protect itself.
Not like the days when a hot computer simply burnt up and died right in the middle of something and loosing everything.
Peace!

For this kind of issue, there is possibility of many reasons including software and hardware. For hardware side, you need to replace smps and check it. if the problem is not solved then you need to check component of the motherboard as well as processor. Also there is possibility of pcb and smt stencil related issue.
