Hi to everyone. New to the forum. New to the radios. I got two Baofeng UV-5R. Working. I can get to work, but they work max 1-2 miles. I’m new to radio and I need help to make it work better. I did change frequency channels A and B to the same channels on both radios – I can talk with person, but only 1-2 miles. How I can setup, so I can talk with other person 7-10 miles away?

You won't get much better range from the fine little radio unless you hook it up to an external yagi or omni antenna outside. If you are a licensed ham radio op you can work through repeaters to get global coverage ! If you don't have a ham radio license, study up and get one, it is quite easy ! Also if you don't care to get a license, look into using it for FRS or GMRS..

I also have a Baofeng UV5R and they are great little cheap radios !! You can't beat them for the price !! If you want to get more range than 1-2 miles, you will need to use a yagi antenna up as high as possible and the more elements on that yagi, the better, in other words, the more director elements, the better it will perform to concentrate your signal in the direction that the antenna is facing.. It is VERY possible to get 70 miles out of 4 watts with the right antenna perched as high as possible ! If you are on a mountain or hill, that's all the better since hopefully there will be less obstructions to attenuate your signal.. I can easily communicate 60 miles with my 4 watts using the Baofeng UV5R and an 11 element yagi @ 40 feet above ground.. In order to communicate over that distance reliably each station will need the same or similar beam type yagi antennas..
