Old Radio Hand but new here... I was very impressed by your Forums and thought I give it a try as a member.
Your post re automation software gave me a chuckle or two on hearing of the concept of a "Virtual Cart Machine".
I was an electronic tech and "quality assurance engineer" (Ha Ha, what a title considering, but that's another story), at Shaffer Electronics Co. in Goleta Ca. in the mid 1970's. Shaffer is (was) "The Birthplace of Broadcast Automation". Its founder Paul had come up with it all and made it work, and $ELL. $ell a lot!
My job there was testing, troubleshooting, and repairing of all things electronic of the Schaffer Audiofile, then their current Cart Machine production.
So the thought of virtual carts etc. nearly 40 years after being up to my you- know-what in real automation and Audiofile production kind of blew my mind.
I've got to check that out! BTW, this software has got to be a lot less painful than dealing with the real thing, as the Audiofile was very complex mechanically and electronically, built to a pricepoint (indeed quite a high one), and must have given station owners lots of headaches.
I recall back when carts were "the thing", every time I heard a jingle or news blurb come on the air with a flaky Audiophile's characteristic tape slippage on startup, it would stand out like a sonic sore thumb.
Just wanted to tell everyone Sonicart 2.0 and 2.2 now works PERFECTLY in wine 1.6 and 1.7 on Linux!
I had trouble with it installing on the older wine 1.4 but it works flawlessly on 1.6 for me. Only thing that is still broke is sonienc which I never use anyways as the only thing that does is encode wavs to MP3s and I can do that in other software.
This is one of those awesome moments for me because I missed sonicart. Yes I know it is not feature packed but its cross fading and automation was so perfect it was hard to tell there was no one at the mixing desk doing it live because of its ability to sense the songs and calculate what kind of fade if any to use between songs. Even the drag and drop songs feature works fine on linux.
Makes me wonder what all other Windows only automation software will work fine now in wine 1.6? This runs just as good as it did on Win XP for me!

For those using linux and need a nice little soundboard I found one called TJingle. This is after I tried to get a windows program called Jingle Palette working but there is something not right with the way it installs in wine and I'm not even sure how well it works on windows. TJingle is as simple as it gets, has a bunch of buttons in a window you can preload with sound clips and the ability to categorize them. Keyboard button presses can trigger sounds too. The version installs in dutch but you can switch to english in the menu and it runs fine in Wine. Simple and it just works since I needed something for sound effects for live shows with friends where I might want to throw in a slow clap or a fart noise or something ridiculous as we're talking and joking around. pixelspark.nl/2007/tjingle-for-windows
I'd be interested if anyone else knows of software that does the same thing that will run on Linux without issue. I found a few other linux specific programs but they either aren't maintained or require annoying dependencies. There is a program called "SoundBoard" that runs as a java executable but it only wants to play stereo files.
I know some automation software already includes a soundboard but I prefer to use it as a stand alone. Before this I used a program called Kickwave which works the same way but has some annoyances like a built in click to order button and that software is so old it should be free.
Also curious what all automation software you folks are using these days. I still come back to Sonicart because it has flawless music transitional fades that picks the type of fade or jump by analyzing the music ending. Thinking about trying out some other software but don't know what is considered the best today that is free and without too much bloat.
If you're looking for something that is not a full automation suite, but rather a soundboard for Windows, then try Sound Byte. It is software written by Chris Smolinski who runs the HF underground which is a pirate forum dedicated to shortwave band.

Preview play button on everything before needing to download. Might be interesting to anyone who wants to do the soundboard thing.
So ogrevorbis is that software full feature free or pay to use after a trial or what?
I believe the software is free to use (no trial time limit), but with limited features unless you buy the full version. I could be wrong. I tried it out, but I don't use it regularly. My show is pretty plain Jane, so I don't have the need for it until I concentrate on my show more than my transmitters.
I'll definitely take a look at those effects when I do decide to use it. Right now I am trying to get my antenna back up because it fell down with the snow.
(BUT NOT THE NEWEST VERSION 3.0.18) once you install VLC version 3.0.3 on your studio computer please you must first disable the automatic updates and the audio song notification banner then you are good to go, I recommend not allowing this app to share on your network if you are running a live broadcast. Because otherwise your player could get shutoff by a troll remotely. It lets you choose to send the information through your entire LAN in the beginning when you setup the program after installing so just uncheck this option and you will be all set
all your audio files must be in a windows music documents folder account under one folder containing many subfolders. For both your artists or compilations and album subfolders are all welcome.
I recommend you put all your DJ talk recordings into your Music in one subfolder with all the DJ recordings inside of it. If you are lazy or ran out of ideas for recordings like me currently. Just simply copy each recording file maybe 50 times CTRL+C CTRL+V over and over again until you think you have enough copies of this audio file
the reason why you copy the same file over and over again is. Because when you use shuffle mode the higher number of a certain recording (including a song). that is inside your playlist. The more likely that recording will come on the air automatically more often then the songs and recordings that are lower in repeats in your playlist
When you start simply put all your music into Windows Music Documents if using Windows OS
then open VLC, click music, then right click music, then click Play and push shuffle over and over again and repeat all over and over again, then wait for the song 1st to finish and if the next song comes on the air automatically then you should be good to go.
Downsides to VLC
1: it's hard to make a ordered Playlist
2: album artwork is often not correct but live streaming has no visible artwork anyway on coming from your server.
3: the more audio files on it the slower it will be
4: you need to press play and shuffle and repeat all button multiple times after deleting a song otherwise your player will play one song than shut off if you leave it unattended
5: remember to enable the repeat all button with shuffle otherwise the music will stop eventually at random
