I think you will have better luck with the 5/8λ ground plane antenna for simplicity of setup and less interaction with objects in the vicinity of it.
J-Poles are really good options for DIY fabrication but they tend to be a compromise antenna since their mounting is easier at the base unlike a center mounted dipole and thus cause some inevitable feed line radiation, and they have slightly lower angle of radiation. Either antenna will have good low angle radiation over other types of antennas and should perform almost equally when setup properly so it really comes down to what your preference is.

J-pole antennas (end fed half wave) are notorious for unwanted feed line currents and radiation. This is due to the lack of decoupling at the feed point. No ground radials or sleeve choke will cause loss of pattern control. A simple sleeve dipole or ground plane works well. The 5/8wl may be slightly better.
