Hey Folks I was wondering what the risk might be in mounting an FM antenna (Stacked Dipole) on say a Chimney? What are the risk involved and how is the best way to go about installing such. Or would there be a better safer way to go with such? I am trying to imagine how I can get the coax from the transmitter to the rooftop and then to the chimney? Also what do I need in order to be safe from lightning storms and the like? I do appreciate all of you guys opinions. If you need more info just ask . I want to safe than sorry as they say Pirate man 1
I would make sure your array is mounted a half foot or more off of your chimney if you can so that when the bricks get wet from rain it won't reflect your signal any. Don't think there would be any issues. In fact sounds like a decent plan since you have the house to do it may as well. If you can you may want to mount the dipoles to a long metal pipe and then mount the base of the pipe to the chimney to get the dipoles above any bricks and house. I know they sell mounts for this exact kind of thing. You will have to shop around and hit up the hardware store.
For lightning you can protect by using a simple lightning gap or arrester. I know Radio Shack used to carry them where you would connect it somewhere in the coax system and then run a fat ground wire to a ground rod. If anything it's a good idea to just unplug the coax in a bad storm but I wouldn't worry too much as the height isn't too high.
If you explain a little more I may be able to help out more. Best of luck.

Thanks Darklife Great advice.
Is there a proper way about getting the coax line from say my transmitter that will be sitting on the shelf in my closet to outside up to the roof? I hate the idea of having coax just sitting on the roof going to the antenna. This is a big roof and it is steep and slanted. What might be a more suitible way of doing this? Thanks Pirate man 1
