Were off the air due to problems. for summer i guess... My question is who out there sells a good am transmitter or kit. Like to have 30 or more watts. This fall I'd like to dual broadcast. This way maybe My am signal will skip sometimes. I'll build my own anplifier for the am signal. I just havent yet. So who out there has a good am exiter or kit? Thanks Davy jones
There really is not much out there for new AM transmitters in the 50 or less watts range that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. This is why many of us build our own since it's not all that hard to design. It's the antenna that becomes the hard part of the project when going on the AM BC bands.
If you need something in a pinch you could use a high quality legal part 15 transmitter at 100mw and go linear after that point to get up around your 30 watts. Usually not the best idea to low level modulate like that though as it can introduce problems you wouldn't deal with if using high level modulation.
Possibly use something like a Rangemaster for the exciter and use a linear to get it to a few watts, then convert an old 160m ham linear to get yourself to 30 or so watts. Or you could just amplify the exciter using class C and high level modulate it at the end of the chain and not use the exciters audio inputs.
30 watts AM is a lot more power than it sounds like. Remember 100% modulation at 30 watts carrier is around 120 watts. Maybe an old 6DQ6 plate modulated 160 or 80 meter ham transmitter could be converted.
im on AM right now. 5 watt plate modulated tube output built by jack giddings. antenna is a morad vertical. played with FM a bit but its just too crowded where im at and AM is more fun when you have the old radios to listen to it on.
