The attachment worked. Welcome to the forums. I once built a simple 6L6 transmitter like that. They work great but mine liked to eat crystals. Got to use those old fat military type crystals for them buggers
The project is moving along. I built this crystal checker www.io.com/~n5fc/xtal_checker.htm a few days ago. Works like a dream. Just plug it into the freq counter and off you go. I had everything I needed in the junk box.
Crystal grinding isn't the great mystery some would have you believe it is. I've had very good luck so far with 800 grit then 1200 grit wet sandpaper. You just have to work clean and you won't be able to vary the crystal frequency by more than 20 KC or so - at least that's been my experience.
How do you re-metallize the crystal face, or do you?
It seems to work without the metallic face. For how long or how well we'll see. Meantime, I just ordered a 6500 KC FT243 to be safe. I just wanted to see how far you could vary a crystal and apparently the answer is not very far. doh!
I'm starting to wonder if frequency synthesizers are cheaper than crystals lately? I was thinking of getting a 1610kc crystal but wonder if the price is really worth it. Using this VFO is a pain in the butt.
