Just wondering what are the best hours to broadcast to reach the largest amount of listeners in a giving day? I live in the burbs! Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thank's!
The "good times" would be what is called "drive time", when folks are out and about in their vehicles with the radio on.
Rush hour times between 5a and 9a, lunch crunch between 11a and 2p, and afternoon bash n smash between 4p and 7p. What remains is called "prime time" from 7p to 10p, then overnight from 10p to 5a the next day.
Overall, the best times that folks are going to catch your broadcast is during the times they are in their vehicles. When people are at home, they usually are watching tv, or on the computer, rarely listening to any radio if at all.
Peace!

If you're doing SW, what's your target audience? SWL's are listening radios from after supper to about 10-11PM loacal time, count on till midnight or maybe 1AM local on a weekend.

If you are in the States, holiday weekends like Memorial Day, Labor Day, Fourth Of July and sometimes even New Years can be good times to reach more listeners. During the daytime on those dasys can be good because many people are out and about, griling, picnicing, boating, etc and have the radio on.
I happen to have a large lake nearby and the boaters and vaction house folks enjoy my broadcasts over the long weekends.
I am on the air from when I get up in the morning until I go to bed ( to many bright lights to try to sleep with all the equipment on). I don't run when I am out of town. sixer
24/7/365 operation here. Well not entirely true. I do shut down when performing maintenance on the automation systems and databases as well as transmitter and aerial maintenance.
Then of course, there are those blasted power outages during a lightning storm or some drunk rammed their 4x4 Ram into a utility pole trying to make it home before the cop catches up!
Peace!

If they don't know your on the air they cant listen in.
More important than hours of play is word of mouth. one good house party and every one will be talking about(insert pirate station here) I know from experience , i went from 10 listeners to 400 listeners in one night. She told two friends that told two friends that told two friends etc. I know how it works... sixer

I can testify to this.
The year is 1990. The place, west Texas. The time, Friday and Saturday nights, the frequency 107.7, the ERP 400W, the aerial homebrew 3 bay phased 1/2 wave double dipole turnstile style, HAAT 30 feet, range 14 miles, cities covered Midland-Odessa.
One Friday evening the station had an "open house" party. The previous estimated listener count was around 300.
The following few weeks, that number grew to over 143,000.
Midland-Odessa combined population at that time, 340+K.
No tweet, no facebook, no real set hours except Friday and Saturday evenings and overnight.
Build it, they will listen, then tell another, and another.
Peace!

drive times are best, meaning commercial stations are selling advertisement/s we dont (well i dont), and listener will scan for tunes theres a good chance they will tune in to you
I try to pick times when all the government offices are closed, nights, weekends, at different times. Not during the day when at work...I turn it off. Been doing this for quite a few years now and want to keep on!
i know this is a somewhat old topic but here is what i do. i do nights and weekends like after 7pm mountain weeknights and weekends and holidays during the day or night. i don't run more than 1 to 3 watts into a 1/2 wave dipole and i don't run for more than a few hours at a time. i run the part 15 certified fm 24/7 except when i'm running my larger transmitter then i shut of the part 15 and run the 1-3 watt. i use an fm user fu30c 0-30 watts which is a rebranded warner rf FMT30L and i also have a home brew continental 802a exciter clone built for 1.25 watts fixed output and a home brew optimod 8000 clone. i also don't run them in a predictable pattern
