After broadcasting on FM for a while again it made me wonder what songs really test the audio gear.
I find myself having to turn on a virtual PC EQ once in a while to make a song sound properly on broadcast.
There are a few things that throw off the tilt of broadcast radio that I can tell.
One is the bass in some songs happen to be too strong. Only thing that cures this is multiband compressors or on the fly attenuation of bass via EQing on the spot (which I do because it's cheaper).
Another biggy is when mixing down L+R for mono AM broadcasting. Sometimes MP3 files can cause some really odd audio when mixing L+R in a compressed song.
Then there is the high frequencies which you'd think would be fixed in FM with low pass filters, but it can really make the audio sound different on air.
My main question here is not any of the above, but SONGS. What songs do you know of that really tests the boundaries of professional or home brewed equipment?
I know this is a bit like asking an audiophile what songs really test equipment. For broadcast equipment I am sure there are some songs that just don't get along with radio stations.
Any song titles are highly welcomed. I want songs that really screw shit up.
