Have any of you been able to listen into other pirate operators near by on AM or FM?
I have listened to many shortwave pirates over the years but have never heard any local AM/FM broadcast band pirates besides a few far away people on 1710kHz.
Even this Christmas I tried to see if I could pick up any Part 15 operators on AM playing music and got nothing. I do live in a small town though but am surprised that there isn't more activity around here considering I have talked to a few people that don't live very far away who have setup and used high power.
Either I tune in at the wrong times or am just too far away from other pirates. Of course with the way AM and FM propagates, or the lack of, it doesn't surprise me a lot.
Just curious if any of you have the opportunity to listen into other local pirates or even Part 15 operators.
Yes I have.....a couple of years ago on a realistic portable AM/FM radio out at the cottage north of Toronto past the high end of the AM band, just past 1700khz. Was great and they were playing oldies all night. The on air DJ was identifying the station as pirate but you can tell a pirate station from a legit commercial one. Loved it, more power to them. The pirates are the only ones offering a real alternative to everything else. Where the signal was coming from I don't know. But unless someone actually surfs the dial listening to what they're hearing, they wouldn't ever come across this.
in 2000 heard FRN 96.7 and another in same town around 2004 94.1
also there was a 101 i knew about in the city north of FRN's town in late 90's but never heard myself. however I did tune into 107.1 (on the air for YEARS - 2005-2009?) and another one at 97? 98? in the northeast area of that city (they even had commercial sponsors - mostly lightclubs)
.....also tuned in on one driving through Amarillo back in 2004.
so I've personally run across 7 - but all several years ago.

Greetings from High Mountain Radio 99.9 FM !
Years ago I heard 'WHOT' AM 1710 KHz from New York City one snowy December night late.. They even gave a good phone numberto call in and I did and they even put me on the air as a caller ! LOL ! Fantastic signal from NYC to Eastern PA ! I don't know what equipment they were using or what power level but said they were running a long wire antenna with a tuner..
I'll never forget that one ! They were heard by a lot of folks that night as several 'reports' were printed in Popular Communications column dedicated to Pirate Radio, cool !!
Enjoy ! Regards, 'Spooky'... "Blues, Soul, Jazz, Reggae and Old School Rock & Roll" for Eastern PA..

I was playing around with the northeast Pennsylvania web SDR. I picked up a station on 1750 kilohertz yes that's right they weren't using 1710. Anyway these guys were playing alternative rock and they were simulcasting there FM station. This was happening from Thanksgiving to a few days afterwards.
When I went to the School for the Blind in Lansing Michigan they had an AM station that was set up buy a few students. They used a 10-foot copper antenna and used bed springs as a coil. That transmitter had some serious power because you could pick it up for a few miles. Of course we're talking AM here.
When I was in Elizabeth City North Carolina I did hear a station that they call themselves pirate 95.3. They also played alternative rock and they could be heard for quite a ways. I did do a search on the internet and found the station on Wikipedia. I'm beginning to wonder if it wasn't a license station.

Greetings From High Mountain radio !
It is a equally good possibility that they were a legit station simply trying to capitalize on the allure of Pirate Radio. There is a legit station in Florida, I believe somewhere near Daytona Beach that identifies as 'Pirate Radio (something)', but in fact they were a legit station also trying to capitalize on pirate radio and playing on words.. I personally have NEVER heard any pirate activity on the FM broadcast band and I've been around a LONG time ! Guess I simply haven't listened enough or in the right place at the right time, I know they are out there but this region lacks any pirate activity on the FM broadcast band, except that is for 'HMR' !
Keep the airwaves warm Brothers and Sisters !! Enjoy ! Coming soon to the 39 Meter Band !
