Anyone playing on CB know how to tell the "group" that an operator is associated with by his "call"?
For instance, I hear a station sign with only "386" and exchange info with another fellow giving just a 3 number ID also. I realize that there are a good number of DX groups out there such as Alpha Papa, Sierra Fox, etc. etc. How are you supposed to know what group these guys are associated with when they never use their full call (Such as 2SFXXXX as an example)?
Surely "386" for instance can be a shortcut ID for multiple groups.
Talk about confusion! I almost never hear a full "callsign" given. With as many groups as I find listed, a simple 3 number call exchange when the channels are jammed with skip seems to be a meaningless contact. Using my example of "386"... there could be dozens of 386's out there, anyone of them could be the guy you have talked to... sheesh! How would qsl cards be exchanged when you have no more information given other than that 3 digit number and a location? You don't know what club or organization to send your card to.
I understand about the aussie accent, but that's only one "scenario" out of many to try to guess. The whole "game" just seems kind of pointless to exchange numbers if you can't identify a club to contact a member if you wish to follow up with a greeting or a QSL card.
