This is really odd I was listening to the FM radio and have a really good outdoor antenna so I pick up just about every station one could for DX FM reception. Well I was flipping through my preprogrammed stations which my stereo system has 25 presets. I started listening to a song on one station and wasn't that interested so I kept flipping through and find another station with the same exact song. Now I know this isn't uncommon for top 40 stations that play the same crap but this was an old song and not something common for stations to play, also both stations were in synch but only a few seconds apart.
I found this very odd as for 1: this was a rare song to be played, 2: they were both very close to sync, 3: the two stations were very far apart from each other and owned by completely different owners, networks.
I remember as a kid tuning through the dial and hearing common songs on various stations, but this is just right out odd. Did station A right out play a feed from station B w/o station A knowing? Did they happen to play the SAME EXACT SONG at the SAME EXACT TIME? This just seems too weird. What's weirder is this happens a lot where I live and these stations are NOT related or even in contact with one another.
So the only thing I can think is that some stations just don't have good enough songs and literally monitor other stations and play their songs over their own stations air waves w/o listeners knowing unless you're weird like me and have a good stereo and listen often enough to notice.
We have 1/2 dozen CBC stations in the Vancouver listening area that all relay each other.
I do have a conspiracy theory that commercial stations are in cahoots when it comes to advert timing sync - to discourage people from "station hopping". A couple did get very big fines for such "collusion".

Peace!
Oh yeah, I forgot about that one. That happens here a lot actually. It seems just when one station goes to adverts all the other stations do the same. Too many to just be a coincidence .
commercials commercials commercials commercials... this is the biggest determent when it comes to listening to the radio, usually inciting station hopping at first. upon the realization that every station is playing a commercial, i always turn the radio off.
