Pretty much what the title says i have a 150watt PLL transmitter with a X-Band link system that i designed and ive found a high up location for it i live in the uk so we have 240v mains power the spot ive located is perfect highest point im gonna be able to find a ventilation shaft that i can lower my transmitter down to the bottom off ive also included bags of silca salt inside the transmitter to keep out moisture but my biggest issues are as followed
Ive located a power source which is 230v constant inside the attic of the place seems to be going to lights or something they have junction boxes etc so i can easily place my mains inside but the biggest problem i face is the fact due to the nature of the place im unable to switch off the mains is there (if possible) any safe way of hooking up to mains without isolating it first?
My suggestion is have a licensed electrician put in a sub panel, or some sort of cutoff first.
Wiring directly to the mains is questionable practice, but wiring it into a mains that cannot be shut off with a breaker is insanity and will also void any insurance policies you may have.
Sorry to be blunt, but as a technician, I've seen peoples lives ruined by doing this
Sound to me like this is some sort of black ops where you don't want a licensed tech snooping around, but there has to be a panel or breaker box somewhere just keep looking, follow the line back to the pole or follow from the pole into the structure.. Sixer
Yea the problem is im not exactly supposed to have access to this place not only that its home to about 80 being 16 stories high so trying to isolate power without the authorities knowing so it as Sixer says its a covert black ops operation and if Offcom (UK's FCC) find out would make the whole idea pretty pointless
If you are pushing 150 watts it won't take them long to find it . It only took Industry Canada a couple of weeks to shut me down after I turned on my new transmitter. (100 watts+2.5x gain antenna) I would hate to lose a bunch of equipment like that... Good luck... sixer
I have a bunch of transmitters ready to go in the event of a seizure this is also why i try to make my transmitters incredibly hard to get to my last 120watt transmitter was on top of a lift and the cables run into the lift room it was there for about 6 - 7 months till the final stage blew and it was pretty much impossible to retrieve the transmitter so we cut the cables and left it there. The UK is as cmradio said is full of pirates we actually have rig thieves and people fighting for frequencies hence why we use X-Band link systems untraceable and this way we only loose the transmitter which we can generally get back on air the same day

That's what I wish some pirates would do in the US. Just all out bruit force and (wishfully thinking) maybe the FCC would just give up. Of course who am I kidding. If we did that here they would probably pass some law sending people to prison for life if they got caught or God knows what
If you are a good pirate and are not causing problems for people then generally offcom will leave you alone we have a lot of gang related pirates who advertise illegal raves and drugs and swear non stop on air

I know this is an old post but wanted to comment on working with a live circuit.. I've done it many many times, insane perhaps, but it can be done if you are CERTAIN to follow certain RULES. WeaR RUBBER GLOVES, GOOD ONES FOR ELECTRICAL WORK, WEAR rubber SOLE SHOES, NEVER touch anything around you and one of the wires at the same time, that could very easily put you at ground potential, creating a path to ground and KILL YOU !
Handling ONLY one wire at a time, and ONLY that wire, being careful not to touch or bump it against anything else that you don't intend to hook it to !
ONLY do 'hot wiring' in an emergency when there is no other recourse, play it SAFE !! Especially playing with 240 VAC !!!
Spooky...
