Greetings To All !
Here is a very small project that encompasses re-purposing a XBOX 360 Power Supply for use as a very suitable 12 Volt Power Supply capable of providing 12 VDC @ 14.2 Amps of DC current, MORE than enough for pretty much ANY low power FM Broadcast Transmitter ! It is a very well regulated, clean power since it was designed for use as a computer power supply ! These XBOX 360 power supplies can be easily found, cheap, on EBay and many thrift stores ! I've purchased them, in good working order, for as little as $5.00 with FREE shipping !
Here are STEP by STEP instructions on how to proceed including pictures to assist you with your project:
1. Carefully remove the connector outer shell housing by using either a sharp utility knife or robust, sharp pocket knife blade, separating the two halves, discard the shell halves.
2. Very carefully remove the moulded on rubber strain relief by cutting very carefully with an X-acto knife or utility knife along it's length and peel it from the cord.
3. Strip approximately 4 inches of the outer rubber insulation from the cable. ***NOTE: For this project we will be sure to leave the ferrite RFI filter intact on the cord as it originally was manufactured.
4. Trim, strip, dress and tin the RED and BLUE wires leaving just enough wire when trimming so that the length remaining will just fold back and just reach the point on the cable where the moulded on ferrite RFI filter is situated. On my project, I chose to simply wire these two wires together as seen in the photographs included as visual aids for this project. ***NOTE: Optionally, you may choose to connect the RED and BLUE wires to a single pole switch for switching the power supply ON and OFF.
5. When trimming your YELLOW and BLACK wires it is best to stagger the YELLOW wires, making them shorter than the BLACK wires.
6. Using wire loop pliers or needle nose pliers form 'J' hooks on the ends of the stripped, trimmed and tinned wires as this will greatly assist you in making a good, solid splice performed during the latter part of this project.
7. All YELLOW wires are +12 VDC. All BLACK wires are -12 VDC. When splicing the YELLOW and BLACK wires onto your termination connector of your choice simply connect all YELLOW wires together and terminate them onto the '+' contact of your termination connector chosen.
8. Join all BLACK wires together and connect to the '-' terminal on the termination connector chosen.
9. Use HEAT SHRINKABLE INSULATION on all soldered wire joints thus making for a nice, neat, solid, professional and tidy finish to your power supply project.
***NOTE: One word of extreme caution ! NEVER allow the PLUS and MINUS terminals to short together on this power supply, it will smoke it and it is a royal pain in the ass to get it apart in order to make the necessary repairs !!
***NOTE: Since I am only able to upload 3 pictures with this thread posting, I plan to have a 'PART 2' for this project, appropriately labeled so that it can be identified quickly and easily.
